It is back to school, and I can begin to feel the anxiety and stress mounting as parents struggle to get everyone ready and out the door on time.
The good news is, with a little help from all family members this fuss can be controlled if not eliminated. The goal is to start the school day on the right foot! Stress is usually the result of not being in control or not being organized. To help control stressful mornings during the school year, a schedule must be initiated with responsibilities being handed out to each family member.
Knowing the rules and understanding each other’s responsibilities will make it easier to meet individual needs. Once these duties have been assigned, a routine can be established that will result in a productive team effort.
Children need to have their homework done the night before and placed inside their backpacks. A drop off spot will need to be established close to the exit door. Every evening before the child goes to bed, he is to leave his backpack and all essentials at this location for easy pick up. If the child doesn’t require a uniform for school, clothes should be selected before going to bed.
We all know the benefits of a good nights rest! Every child needs a scheduled bedtime. We also know that bodies cannot operate or function without fuel. The importance of a well-balanced breakfast is possibly the most important meal of the day. Select and prepare a healthy breakfast that will sustain your child’s energy level. Whatever foods you select, make sure that you have a good balance of protein, carbs and good fats.
And finally, instead of asking your child how his day went, try using this technique. Ask your child to name three things that made him happy about his day? This should get the ball rolling for further communication with your child.
Being a parent is no easy task, but by taking the time to establish these small but significant steps will help your child learn to win from within!
