Making Healthy Choices

It’s that time!  The holidays are just around the corner, and with all that left over Halloween candy, it is important for parents to help children make healthy choices.

The first thing parents must understand is that healthy choices start with healthy selections.  With so many studies being conducted on obesity, the answer begins with a well-balanced diet and a sufficient dose of physical activity for every child.

A healthy diet has been proven to help children in many ways.  Some of which include; the child’s temperament, his energy level, and the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time.

One way to encourage making healthy choices is to work together reading nutritional labels, and staying clear of  foods that have a high content of sugar, fructose, or mention the word hydrogenated within the label.  According to many experts, foods that contain high levels of these ingredients are considered unhealthy for you.  I am no expert, but I am learning quickly about which foods to clearly avoid.

My suggestion, expose children to foods that have the greatest nutritional value and eliminate buying foods for the house that are not healthy.  This way, if children have to make choices, chances are they will select foods that they are comfortable eating.

My motto is, and has always has been, “out of sight, out of mind”.  And believe me, it works!
