Although prayers and thanks were probably offered at the 1621 harvest gathering, the first recorded religious Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth happened two years later in 1623, according to holiday history. On this occasion, the colonists gave thanks to God for rain after a two-month drought.
As we gather together to share the blessings of Thanksgiving, it is equally important to let special people know you’re thinking of them at this bountiful time of year! I also hope we can include a special prayer for the families and businesses who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. These families need both our prayers and our stewardship more than ever.
Many generous folks use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to help the less fortunate. Some people volunteer to serve food at homeless shelters on Thanksgiving Day and others donate to shelters or participate in canned food drives.
And just as the colonists found peace through prayer, may you be filled with his joy, and blessed with family and friends to surround your table, as together we give thanks!
